5 Tips for Setting up your New Phone or Tablet

Santa was hard at work delivering new smart phones, iPads and other tablets. It’s exciting to unwrap a new device, but we know that it can also be intimidating.  My brother and I surprised my mom with a new iPhone this year—an upgrade from her very old iPhone 7. Luckily for my mom, she has built in tech support with Candoo Tech! We made sure she had everything backed up to the cloud, so the transfer was easy and, in just a few hours, she was using it like a pro. We left her with a Candoo Tech How To guide just in case she needed a refresher.

Here are some tips for how to get started with your new device:

  1. Cloud Back Up: Before you switch to a new device, make sure that you have everything backed up.  You can set up a cloud account to make sure that your email, contacts, calendar and documents are backed up and that that they sync on all devices. If you own a phone, computer and tablet, you can see the same information everywhere if it’s set up correctly. You can use iCloud or Google Drive to back-up and sync everything.

  2. Password Manager: Are you still writing your passwords on scraps of paper or resetting them all the time? Consider getting a password manager. It’s so frustrating to forget your password and have to reset it all the time, and it’s not that secure to write it down on scraps of paper. Check out our password managers blog for more details.

  3. Add an App: This is the fun part. Do you love to play cards? Watch ballet? Listen to audiobooks? Your new phone or tablet is a gateway to the world. Put on an app to access something that will make your life more fun!

  4. Adjust the font size: Make sure that the text size is set up so you can see it easily. You can change the background to black with white font, which is sometimes easier to see.

  5. Get a Lesson: If it’s the first time you have used a smart phone (iPhone or Android), it can take a while to get used to it. And, if you are switching from an earlier version of an iPhone, there’s a lot of new things to learn. Apple has free classes for the iPhone. If you want a lesson at home, try a Candoo Tech Phone 101 lesson to show you the basics 1:1.

Most importantly, have fun! Don’t be afraid to try things out. Remember, you’ve learned other things that were hard at first—maybe a new language, or how to cook a new dish or try a new sport. It’s hard at first, but with practice, you “candoo” it!
