Happy Father's Day
This is my first father’s day without my dad, Morton “Skip” Hamburg, who passed away at 89 years old earlier this year. My dad was one of my inspirations for starting Candoo Tech. He was so supportive of making my dreambecome a reality and was proud that he played a role in starting my business.
Dad was an early adopter of technology and an early visionary about the role of media and technology. He was the author of “All About Cable", one of the first and most widely-used legal books on the subject of cable television, when most people were still watching 3 channels on network TV. As an adjunct professor at NYU Law, he conducted one of the early satellite learning classes in the ‘70’s with students from the Midwest and China and he was involved as legal counsel to the Edison Responsive Environment's Talking Typewriter, an early version of interactive learning, which was used to teach preschoolers how to read and write-- in 1966!
He was the first guy in line at Best Buy or the Apple store when a new device came out—he had an AOL email address before anyone I knew and he bought me my first Alexa voice recognition device. But, he was also the first one to call tech support. At one point, he saw the guys at the Apple Genius Bar more than he saw this family!
Over time, as his hearing got worse and his macular degeneration made it difficult to see the screen and his attention span got shorter, it was harder for him to get to the Apple store and the regular tech support just wasn’t doing it for him anymore. I realized he, and so many others, needed a patient, reliable, safe, affordable way to get support—from quick questions or more complicated issues. Candoo Tech was born from this need.
With so many families still sheltering in place, this Father’s Day, I know many of you will not be able to be together in person. I hope that you will be able to find ways to connect—whether it’s a phone call, a Zoom gathering (see our tips for how to have a successful Zoom Father’s Day) or a “car-ade” (yes, that’s new a thing—a drive by version of a parade).
To all the dads out there who have inspired their children and encouraged them to follow their dreams, Happy Father’s Day.
