How to Improve your Online Account Security

Online security is so important. Our top tips for keeping your information safe online include:

  1. Use strong passwords and manage them safely.

  2. Activate two-factor authentication (2FA).

  3. Regularly install available software/system updates .

  1.  Use strong passwords

A strong password helps:

  • Keep your personal information safe

  • Protect your emails, files, and other content

  • Prevent someone else from getting into your account

Longer passwords are stronger, so make your password at least 12 characters long.
Make sure it’s easy to remember! Here are some ideas to make longer passwords that are easier to remember.

It is also helpful to write down your passwords and keep them in a safe place. Avoid using easily accessible info (like from your social media profile) such as your birthday or a family member’s name. It is also best to not share passwords over text or email.

    2. Two Factor Authentication (2FA)

    What is Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)?

2FA is like having a second lock on your account, apart from your password.
It requires you to provide two different pieces of information to prove that you are the real owner of the account. It's especially helpful to prevent unauthorized access to your account even if someone else gains access to your password.

    How does it work?

    • You enter your regular password to log in, just like you always do.

    • After entering your password, the website or app will ask for something else, like a code sent to your phone through a text message.

    • Once you provide this second piece of information (the code from your phone), the website or app knows it's you, and it grants you access to your account.

    3. Software & System Updates

Here are some top reasons why updates are essential:

    • Security: Updates make your computer or phone more secure, protecting you from cyber threats like viruses, malware, and hackers.

    • Performance: Updates can also improve how your device works. They may make it faster, smoother, and more stable, giving you a better experience.

    • Compatibility: Sometimes, new software or apps won’t work correctly on older versions of the operating system.

Your device will notify you when updates are available. All you have to do is follow the instructions to install them.
