How to Choose a New Device for Mom or Dad
Five Questions To Ask Before Buying Tech Devices for Older Adults
Older adults are relying on technology more and more for everyday tasks and to stay connected and engaged. Getting your parent or grandparent a new smart phone, tablet or laptop is a great idea, but not every device is best for older adults. It’s important to understand how they will be using it and if they have any physical or cognitive issues to be aware of.
Here are some important questions to ask when selecting a new device as a gift:
How comfortable are they with technology?
According to a Pew Research study, almost 75% of older adults were frustrated by or confused by technology. And, of course, there are many older adults who are very technically sophisticated. If your relative is a total tech “newbie”, that’s ok. Just make sure you are getting a device that’s easy to use. We suggest tablets over laptops or computers for those who are new to technology.
Does your family member wear hearing aids?
Nearly two-thirds of adults over age 70 have hearing loss, which can impact their ability to learn and use new technology. Make sure that the new device can be connected via Bluetooth Technology to hearing aids which can significantly enhance the user experience for hearing impaired individuals.
Does your family member have any vision issues?
Good news is that most fonts sizes and screen contrasts can be adjusted. And there are many devices that can “read” text outloud. There are hardware and software adaptations that can address many vision related disabilities.
Does the individual have mobility limitations?
Some older adults may find it difficult to hold a tablet or swipe a screen while others may struggle to press a keyboard or use a mouse. For others with limited mobility, technology can make everyday tasks easier, such as turning off the lights or playing music. Check out options depending on what you will need the device to help with.
How and where will the device be used?
Will the user want to travel with their device? Do they prefer to use it at a desk or table or siting in a chair/couch/bed? Do they have wifi at home or will the device need to come with cellular data?
