Top 5 Tips for Voting Safely on Election Day

The 2020 election is less than a month away and there's been lots of discussion about voting by mail and absentee ballots. It's more important than ever to make sure that every vote counts and that you can vote safely. This year, more than ever, many of us are relying on technology to order an absentee or vote by mail ballot and track its progress.

Here are some tips to getting a ballot and making sure that your vote counts.

  1. Make sure you are registered to vote. To check your registration status, visit vote.org/am-i-registered-to-vote/ to confirm you are eligible to vote on election day.

  2. If you aren’t registered to vote, register online. Go to vote.org/register-to-vote/ to register online. It takes less than 2 minutes to make sure your voice is heard on election day.

  3. Check your state’s Absentee Ballot rules and deadlines. Go to vote.org and scroll down to the bottom of the page. Find the state you are registered in and click to find out important deadlines and voting information.

  4. When your Absentee Ballot arrives, read the directions carefully. Some states require your signature more than once, some have a dedicated security envelope and others have specific instructions for filling out the bubbles. If your ballot isn’t filled out correctly, your vote won’t be counted.

  5. Check to see if your state offers early voting. If you want to vote in person but want to avoid the large crowds on Election Day, some states offer early voting. Click here to see if your state participates and find out when your state’s early voting period is.
